Older chimneys were often built with lime mortar parging that has since eroded, or with flues that were never sized for a modern appliance. HETAS and the Gas Safe Register both recommend lining flues of 12 metres or more, and lining is the standard repair where the original render lining has broken down.
A correctly graded stainless steel liner restores the integrity of the flue, improves draw and efficiency, and reduces the condensation and damp that untreated masonry chimneys are prone to.
Grade 316 liners
The standard choice for gas, oil and well-seasoned solid fuel appliances — logs, coal and anthracite burned at normal operating temperatures.
Grade 904 liners
Recommended for slumbering stoves left on a low overnight burn, where condensation and the acid content of coal or anthracite corrode a standard liner faster.

Lining a chimney flue is strongly recommended by the Gas Safe Register and HETAS for new gas and solid fuel installations, especially in older properties where the original render lining has degraded. A liner improves safety, efficiency and draw, and helps prevent the condensation and damp that untreated masonry flues are prone to.
Gas appliances don't produce the acid content that solid fuel does, so a grade 316 stainless steel liner is the standard choice. Solid fuel appliances — particularly stoves left slumbering overnight on coal or anthracite — create more condensation and corrosion, which is where a grade 904 liner earns its keep.
For logs and well-seasoned solid fuel burned at normal operating temperature, grade 316 is generally sufficient. If the stove is regularly left on a low overnight burn with coal or anthracite, grade 904 is the more resistant option.
Current regulations require that any chimney flue of 12 metres or more in height is lined before a new gas or solid fuel appliance is installed. Even below that height, lining is the standard repair where an original render lining has broken down.
